1.समान्तर श्रेढ़ी (Arithmetic Progression) -

निम्न अनुक्रम पर विचार कीजिए -
(i) 2,5,8,11,......     (ii) 4,8,12,16,.....
(iii) 1,4,5,9,14,....  (iv) 5,6,2,9,3.....
स्पष्ट है कि समूह (i) में प्रत्येक संख्या अपनी पूर्व संख्या से 3अधिक है, समूह (ii) में प्रत्येक संख्या अपनी पूर्व संख्या से 2 गुणा है, समूह (iii) में प्रत्येक संख्या अपनी पूर्ववर्ती दो संख्याओं का जोड़ है, जबकि समूह (iv) की संख्याओं में कोई क्रम या नियम नहीं है जिससे कि इस समूह में आगे की संख्याएँ ज्ञात की जा सके। उपर्युक्त समूहों में से प्रथम तीन समूह अनुक्रम के उदाहरण है।

2.परिभाषा( Definition) -

यदि राशियाँ किसी क्रम में निश्चित नियमानुसार हो, तो उसे अनुक्रम कहते हैं। अनुक्रम की प्रत्येक संख्या उसका पद कहला है।

3.समुच्चय के रूप में अनुक्रम-

प्राकृत संख्याओं के समुच्चय N से किसी अन्य समुच्चय S से परिभाषित फलन को अनुक्रम कहते हैं अर्थात् किसी समुच्चय S एक नियम है जो प्रत्येक प्राकृत संख्या को S के अद्वितीय अवयव से सम्बंधित करता है।
यदि N ={1,2,3,.........,n}प्राकृत संख्याओं का परिमित समुच्चय है तथा फलन f:N->S, N से अन्य समुच्चय s में परिभाषित हो तो प्राकृत संख्याओं 1,2,3,......,n के प्रतिबिंबों का समुच्चय {f(1),f(2),f(3),..........,f(n)}एक परिमित अनुक्रम कहलाता है। इस प्रकार यदि फलन f:N - S हो तो समुच्चय {f(1),f(2),f(3),...........,f(n)}अपरिमित अनुक्रम कहलाता है। इसे {f(n)} या <f(n) >से व्यक्त करते हैं। f(1),f(2),f(3),.......,f(n) अनुक्रम के क्रमशः प्रथम, द्वितीय, तृतीय,....., n वां पद कहलाते हैं। अनुक्रम का n वां पद व्यापक पद कहलाता है। व्यापक पद को an या Tn से व्यक्त करते हैं।

4.श्रेणी(Series) -

 प्रत्येक अनुक्रम के संगत एक श्रेणी होती है जिसमें पदों के मध्य धन या ऋण का चिन्ह होता है। प्रत्येक श्रेणी का एक संगत अनुक्रम होता है।

5.श्रेढ़ी (Progression) -

कुछ विशिष्ट प्रतिबंध होने पर अनुक्रम को श्रेढ़ी कहते हैं। अर्थात् एक अनुक्रम श्रेढ़ी कहलाती है यदि उसके पदों का संख्यात्मक मान किसी विशिष्ट नियम के अन्तर्गत बढ़ता या घटता है।

6.समान्तर श्रेढ़ी (Arithmetic Progression) -

समान्तर श्रेढ़ी वह श्रेढ़ी है जिसका प्रत्येक पद अपने पूर्वपद में कोई नियत राशि जोड़ने अथवा घटाने से प्राप्त होता है। दूसरे शब्दों में समान्तर श्रेढ़ी एक ऐसा अनुक्रम है जिसका प्रत्येक पद का उसके पूर्ववर्ती पद से अन्तर सदैव स्थिर रहता है। इस स्थिर अंतर को सार्व अन्तर कहते हैं। समान्तर श्रेढ़ी को संक्षेप में स. श्रे. (A. P.) कहते हैं।
उदाहरण - यदि एक स. श्रे. में m पदों का योगफल n तथा n पदों का योगफल m हो तो सिद्ध कीजिए कि (m+n) पदों का योगफल - (m+n) होगा।
हल- माना दी गई स. श्रे. का प्रथम पद a तथा सार्व अन्तर d है। तब S(m) = n
(m/2){2a+(m-1)d}=n
2am +m(m-1)d=n........... (1)
S(n)=m
(n/2){2a+(n-1)d}=m......... (2)
(1) में से (2)को घटाने पर -
2a(m-n)+{m(m-1)-n(n-1)}d=2n-2m
या 2a(m-n)+{m^2-n^2)-(m-n)}d=-2(m-n)
या 2a +(m+n-1)d=-2[दोनों ओर (m-n) से भाग देने पर].... (3.)
S(m+n)=(m+n)/2{2a+(m+n-1)d}
              =(m+n) /2[-2]=-(m+n)

गणितीय आगमन (Mathematical Induction )सिद्धान्त की सहायता से  व्यापक से एक विशिष्ट परिणाम निकाला जाता है। इस प्रकार से प्राप्त गणितीय निष्कर्ष प्राप्त करना गणितीय निगमन है। परन्तु इस प्रकार से प्राप्त परिणाम हमेशा ही सत्य हो  यह  आवश्यक नहीँ हैं क्योंकि ये परिणाम  कुछ विशेष परिस्थितियों पर निर्भर करते हैं।  अत : कुछ विशिष्ट परिणामों  को सत्य मानकर व्यापक परिणाम नहीं निकाला जा सकता हैं। इसके लिए एक विशिष्ट प्रक्रिया का पालन करना होता हैं इसे ही हम  गणितीय आगमन  सिद्धान्त (principle of Mathematical Induction) कहते हैं।
